A key area of disagreement is the nature of God: Is God a Trinity or absolutely one? To promote interfaith dialogue, Christians must understand the history of the conversation and also articulate the doctrine of the Trinity in reasonable, compelling ways. In this New Explorations in Theology volume, Sherene Nicholas Khouri offers both historical and constructive responses to Islamic objections to the doctrine of the Trinity. Khouri considers arguments from Arabic Christian theologians and philosophers in the eighth to tenth centuries, primarily John of Damascus, Theodore Abū Qurrah, and Yaḥyā Ibn cAdī. When Muslims expanded beyond the Arabic peninsula, Christians in occupied regions were spurred to defend the Trinity against the Islamic understanding of tawḥid , the absolute oneness of Allah, and against misconceptions of Christian belief. Khouri then applies the insights of these little-known thinkers to current theology and apologetics conversations. She makes the case for appealing to the common ground of God as the greatest conceived being, then arguing that such a being must be relational in nature. While Christians today debate models of the Trinity with each other and with Muslims, they can be confident that Christians throughout history have believed in triune relationality and found in the doctrine of the Trinity an invitation to personal relationship with the divine. Featuring new monographs with cutting-edge research, New Explorations in Theology provides a platform for constructive, creative work in the areas of systematic, historical, philosophical, biblical, and practical theology.","forthcoming":false,"isbn13":"9781514008843","publication_date":"20241119","publisher":"InterVarsity Press","slug":"triune-relationality","subtitle":"A Trinitarian Response to Islamic Monotheism","title":"Triune Relationality"},"discovery":{"categories":{"all":[{"bisac_code":"REL037060","confidence_band":"high","label":"Islamic Theology","score":0.8072,"source":"bisac_hint_model"},{"bisac_code":"REL037010","confidence_band":"medium","label":"Islamic History","score":0.7587,"source":"bisac_hint_model"},{"bisac_code":"REL037030","confidence_band":"medium","label":"Islamic Rituals & Practice","score":0.7493,"source":"bisac_hint_model"}],"hint":[{"bisac_code":"REL037060","confidence_band":"high","label":"Islamic Theology","score":0.8072,"source":"bisac_hint_model"},{"bisac_code":"REL037010","confidence_band":"medium","label":"Islamic History","score":0.7587,"source":"bisac_hint_model"},{"bisac_code":"REL037030","confidence_band":"medium","label":"Islamic Rituals & Practice","score":0.7493,"source":"bisac_hint_model"}],"publisher":[{"bisac_code":"REL017000","confidence_band":"high","label":"Comparative Religion","score":1,"source":"onix_publisher_code"},{"bisac_code":"REL037060","confidence_band":"high","label":"Islamic Theology","score":1,"source":"onix_publisher_code"},{"bisac_code":"REL067030","confidence_band":"high","label":"Christian Apologetics","score":1,"source":"onix_publisher_code"}]},"genres":[{"label":"Islamic Theology","score":0.8072,"slug":"islamic-theology"},{"label":"Islamic History","score":0.7587,"slug":"islamic-history"},{"label":"Islamic Rituals & Practice","score":0.7493,"slug":"islamic-rituals-practice"}],"reader_fit":["Good for readers interested in Christian-Muslim theological dialogue","Readers exploring historical and constructive theology of the Trinity"],"related_lists":[],"series":null,"similar_books":[{"authors":["Donald Fairbairn"],"book_id":"9780830838738","cover_image_url":"https://img.bookfrontier.com/9780830838738.jpg?v=b5920593170566ff","score":0.7371,"title":"Life in the Trinity","url":"https://bookfrontier.com/books/9780830838738"},{"authors":["Miroslav Volf"],"book_id":"9780062041715","cover_image_url":"https://img.bookfrontier.com/9780062041715.jpg?v=e8480e0250f85628","score":0.7318,"title":"Allah","url":"https://bookfrontier.com/books/9780062041715"},{"authors":["Timothy George"],"book_id":"9780310247487","cover_image_url":"https://img.bookfrontier.com/9780310247487.jpg?v=d8c6148d13717d22","score":0.7246,"title":"Is the Father of Jesus the God of Muhammad?","url":"https://bookfrontier.com/books/9780310247487"},{"authors":["Andrew Louth"],"book_id":"9780830840458","cover_image_url":"https://img.bookfrontier.com/9780830840458.jpg?v=c87ef536772c6206","score":0.7128,"title":"Introducing Eastern Orthodox Theology","url":"https://bookfrontier.com/books/9780830840458"},{"authors":["Stanley Grenz"],"book_id":"9780664232382","cover_image_url":"https://img.bookfrontier.com/9780664232382.jpg?v=a58f528f8c65ae0b","score":0.7101,"title":"The Social God and the Relational Self","url":"https://bookfrontier.com/books/9780664232382"},{"authors":["Mustafa Akyol"],"book_id":"9781250199355","cover_image_url":"https://img.bookfrontier.com/9781250199355.jpg?v=17e9b96d8971a31b","score":0.7061,"title":"The Islamic Jesus","url":"https://bookfrontier.com/books/9781250199355"},{"authors":["Nathan R.
