Ghouls live among us, the same as normal people in every way—except their craving for human flesh. Ken Kaneki is an ordinary college student until a violent encounter turns him into the first half-human half-ghoul hybrid. Trapped between two worlds, he must survive Ghoul turf wars, learn more about Ghoul society and master his new powers. Before the steel frame incident in the 20th Ward, there were reports of Ghouls lurking among the masses in Tokyo, carefully stalking their prey. This novel covers the events that occurred before the opening act of Tokyo Ghoul —a time when Kaneki was still human, the Kirishimas still lived together, and Rize enjoyed her feasts.","forthcoming":false,"isbn13":"9781421591773","publication_date":"20170418","publisher":"VIZ Media LLC","slug":"tokyo-ghoul-past","subtitle":"","title":"Tokyo Ghoul: Past"},"discovery":{"categories":{"all":[{"bisac_code":"CGN004190","confidence_band":"medium","label":"Science Fiction Manga","score":0.7877,"source":"bisac_hint_model"},{"bisac_code":"CGN004040","confidence_band":"medium","label":"Horror Comics","score":0.7817,"source":"bisac_hint_model"},{"bisac_code":"CGN004050","confidence_band":"medium","label":"General Manga","score":0.7778,"source":"bisac_hint_model"}],"hint":[{"bisac_code":"CGN004190","confidence_band":"medium","label":"Science Fiction Manga","score":0.7877,"source":"bisac_hint_model"},{"bisac_code":"CGN004040","confidence_band":"medium","label":"Horror Comics","score":0.7817,"source":"bisac_hint_model"},{"bisac_code":"CGN004050","confidence_band":"medium","label":"General Manga","score":0.7778,"source":"bisac_hint_model"}],"publisher":[{"bisac_code":"CGN004050","confidence_band":"high","label":"General Manga","score":1,"source":"onix_publisher_code"},{"bisac_code":"CGN004060","confidence_band":"high","label":"Tie-In Comics","score":1,"source":"onix_publisher_code"},{"bisac_code":"CGN004320","confidence_band":"high","label":"Light Novels","score":1,"source":"onix_publisher_code"}]},"genres":[{"label":"Science Fiction Manga","score":0.7877,"slug":"science-fiction-manga"},{"label":"Horror Comics","score":0.7817,"slug":"horror-comics"},{"label":"General Manga","score":0.7778,"slug":"general-manga"}],"reader_fit":["Good for readers interested in events before Tokyo Ghoul’s opening act"],"related_lists":[],"series":null,"similar_books":[{"authors":["Sui Ishida","Shin Towada"],"book_id":"9781421590578","cover_image_url":"https://img.bookfrontier.com/9781421590578.jpg?v=35e76b786cee915a","score":0.9138,"title":"Tokyo Ghoul: Days","url":"https://bookfrontier.com/books/9781421590578"},{"authors":["Sui Ishida","Shin Towada"],"book_id":"9781421590585","cover_image_url":"https://img.bookfrontier.com/9781421590585.jpg?v=9de3699ea5257d89","score":0.9073,"title":"Tokyo Ghoul: Void","url":"https://bookfrontier.com/books/9781421590585"},{"authors":["Sui Ishida"],"book_id":"9781421580364","cover_image_url":"https://img.bookfrontier.com/9781421580364.jpg?v=a6e47ed32a07d8a0","score":0.9059,"title":"Tokyo Ghoul, Vol. 1","url":"https://bookfrontier.com/books/9781421580364"},{"authors":["Sui Ishida"],"book_id":"9781974703180","cover_image_url":"https://img.bookfrontier.com/9781974703180.jpg?v=ae413cc73b18c6f3","score":0.8641,"title":"Tokyo Ghoul Complete Box Set","url":"https://bookfrontier.com/books/9781974703180"},{"authors":["Kenichi Kondo"],"book_id":"9781974738946","cover_image_url":"https://img.bookfrontier.com/9781974738946.jpg?v=ca369c5b344ea793","score":0.7194,"title":"Dark Gathering, Vol. 1","url":"https://bookfrontier.com/books/9781974738946"},{"authors":["Kei Urana","Hideyoshi Andou"],"book_id":"9798888774472","cover_image_url":"https://img.bookfrontier.com/9798888774472.jpg?v=1031c75ff1cc88e5","score":0.715,"title":"Gachiakuta 10","url":"https://bookfrontier.com/books/9798888774472"},{"authors":["Ohana"],"book_id":"9781647294595","cover_image_url":"https://img.bookfrontier.com/9781647294595.jpg?v=b733d069fbcd1846","score":0.7146,"title":"23:45","url":"https://bookfrontier.com/books/9781647294595"},{"authors":["Kei Urana","Hideyoshi Andou"],"book_id":"9798888770207","cover_image_url":"https://img.bookfrontier.com/9798888770207.jpg?v=c58eb814fb5192ba","score":0.7123,"title":"Gachiakuta 1","url":"https://bookfrontier.com/books/9798888770207"}],"topics":[{"evidence_refs":["keyword:young jump"],"label":"Young","score":0.303,"slug":"young"},{"evidence_refs":["keyword:anime"],"label":"Anime","score":0.032,"slug":"anime"},{"evidence_refs":["keyword:english adaptation"],"label":"English","score":0.03,"slug":"english"},{"evidence_refs":["keyword:half-human"],"label":"Human","score":0.0259,"slug":"human"},{"evidence_refs":["phrase_map_match"],"label":"Short Stories","score":0.0216,"slug":"short-story"}],"what_you_get":["Themes: Ghouls stalking prey in Tokyo, Ghouls living among humans.","Story elements: Prequel.","Themes: Young, Anime, English."]},"llm_signals":{"confidence":0.78,"pacing":"unknown","reader_fit":["Readers interested in events before Tokyo Ghoul’s opening act"],"themes":["Ghouls stalking prey in Tokyo","Ghouls living among humans"],"tropes":["Prequel"]},"source_presence":{"amazon":true,"book_detail":true,"goodreads":true,"llm_signals":true,"similarity_seed":true},"stats":{"amazon_ratings_count":407,"goodreads_ratings_count":700,"goodreads_reviews_count":48,"quality_score":0.9143}}
