She takes the book’s title from Dionne Brand’s novel In Another Place, Not Here , where eroticism between women is likened to the sweet and subversive act of cane cutters stealing sugar. The natural world is repeatedly reclaimed and reinterpreted to express love between women in the poetry and prose that Tinsley analyzes. She not only recuperates stories of Caribbean women loving women, stories that have been ignored or passed over by postcolonial and queer scholarship until now, she also shows how those erotic relations and their literary evocations form a poetics and politics of decolonization. Tinsley’s interpretations of twentieth-century literature by Dutch-, English-, and French-speaking women from the Caribbean take into account colonialism, migration, labor history, violence, and revolutionary politics. Throughout Thiefing Sugar , Tinsley connects her readings to contemporary matters such as neoimperialism and international LGBT and human-rights discourses. She explains too how the texts that she examines intervene in black feminist, queer, and postcolonial studies, particularly when she highlights the cultural limitations of the metaphors that dominate queer theory in North America and Europe, including those of the closet and “coming out.”","forthcoming":false,"isbn13":"9780822347774","publication_date":"20100818","publisher":"Duke University Press","slug":"thiefing-sugar","subtitle":"Eroticism Between Women in Caribbean Literature","title":"Thiefing Sugar"},"discovery":{"categories":{"all":[{"bisac_code":"LIT004160","confidence_band":"medium","label":"Queer Literary Criticism","score":0.7697,"source":"bisac_hint_model"},{"bisac_code":"LIT004100","confidence_band":"medium","label":"Caribbean & Latin American Criticism","score":0.7523,"source":"bisac_hint_model"},{"bisac_code":"LIT004290","confidence_band":"medium","label":"Women Authors Criticism","score":0.7398,"source":"bisac_hint_model"}],"hint":[{"bisac_code":"LIT004160","confidence_band":"medium","label":"Queer Literary Criticism","score":0.7697,"source":"bisac_hint_model"},{"bisac_code":"LIT004100","confidence_band":"medium","label":"Caribbean & Latin American Criticism","score":0.7523,"source":"bisac_hint_model"},{"bisac_code":"LIT004290","confidence_band":"medium","label":"Women Authors Criticism","score":0.7398,"source":"bisac_hint_model"}],"publisher":[{"bisac_code":"LIT004100","confidence_band":"high","label":"Caribbean & Latin American Criticism","score":1,"source":"onix_publisher_code"},{"bisac_code":"LIT004160","confidence_band":"high","label":"Queer Literary Criticism","score":1,"source":"onix_publisher_code"},{"bisac_code":"LIT006000","confidence_band":"high","label":"Literary Theory","score":1,"source":"onix_publisher_code"}]},"genres":[{"label":"Queer Literary Criticism","score":0.7697,"slug":"queer-literary-criticism"},{"label":"Caribbean & Latin American Criticism","score":0.7523,"slug":"caribbean-latin-american-criticism"},{"label":"Women Authors Criticism","score":0.7398,"slug":"women-authors-criticism"}],"reader_fit":["Readers of Caribbean women’s poetry and prose","Good for readers interested in queer and postcolonial criticism"],"related_lists":[],"series":null,"similar_books":[{"authors":["Jaime Harker"],"book_id":"9781469643359","cover_image_url":"https://img.bookfrontier.com/9781469643359.jpg?v=ca9dc0ddb2cb4ba7","score":0.6696,"title":"The Lesbian South","url":"https://bookfrontier.com/books/9781469643359"},{"authors":["Tania Modleski"],"book_id":"9780415974516","cover_image_url":"https://img.bookfrontier.com/9780415974516.jpg?v=eb630edbd31eaa2c","score":0.668,"title":"Loving With a Vengeance","url":"https://bookfrontier.com/books/9780415974516"},{"authors":["Noire","Kim Johnson","Urban Audiobooks","& 0 more"],"book_id":"9781416533023","cover_image_url":"https://img.bookfrontier.com/9781416533023.jpg?v=f1c2c3a8363c90b7","score":0.6637,"title":"Thong on Fire","url":"https://bookfrontier.com/books/9781416533023"},{"authors":["Jane Igharo"],"book_id":"9780593101940","cover_image_url":"https://img.bookfrontier.com/9780593101940.jpg?v=a3f25f33b4cd088c","score":0.6627,"title":"Ties That Tether","url":"https://bookfrontier.com/books/9780593101940"},{"authors":["Shawna Kenney"],"book_id":"9781580055291","cover_image_url":"https://img.bookfrontier.com/9781580055291.jpg?v=5e5cad6fbc354a25","score":0.6604,"title":"Book Lovers","url":"https://bookfrontier.com/books/9781580055291"}],"topics":[],"what_you_get":["Themes: Caribbean women’s literature, Women-loving-women narratives, Decolonial literary politics.","Reading lane: Queer Literary Criticism and Caribbean & Latin American Criticism.","Publisher: Duke University Press."]},"llm_signals":{"confidence":0.87,"pacing":"unknown","reader_fit":["Readers of Caribbean women’s poetry and prose","Readers interested in queer and postcolonial criticism"],"themes":["Caribbean women’s literature","Women-loving-women narratives","Decolonial literary politics"],"tropes":[]},"source_presence":{"amazon":true,"book_detail":true,"goodreads":true,"llm_signals":true,"similarity_seed":true},"stats":{"amazon_ratings_count":8,"goodreads_ratings_count":42,"goodreads_reviews_count":4,"quality_score":0.8531}}
