The sand, too, had a share in it, and human beings were involved, but the wind was the primal force, and but for it the whole series of events would not have happened. there was nothing to break the sweep of the wind across the treeless prairies, when the sand blew in blinding fury across the plains. The winds were cruel to women that came under their tyranny. They were at them ceaselessly, buffeting them with icy blasts in winter, burning them with hot breath in summer, parching their skins and roughening their hair, and trying to wear down their nerves by attrition, and drive them away. The Wind by Dorothy Scarborough is a tensely written story about Letty Mason’s descent into madness. The novel opens with Letty, an 18-year-old orphan from Virginia, on a westbound train headed to Sweetwater Texas. Letty, coming from the lush and verdant Virginia, is not prepared for the drought-burdened Texas desert where there is no escape from the incessant wind. Nor can she cope with the financial desperation of everyday life in Sweetwater. Masterfully written, liberally sprinkled with genuine Texas vernacular.","forthcoming":false,"isbn13":"9781649741486","publication_date":"20210323","publisher":"Start Publishing LLC","slug":"the-wind","subtitle":"","title":"The Wind"},"discovery":{"categories":{"all":[{"bisac_code":"FIC027100","confidence_band":"medium","label":"Western Romance","score":0.7232,"source":"bisac_hint_model"},{"bisac_code":"FIC014080","confidence_band":"low","label":"20th-Century Historical Fiction","score":0.666,"source":"bisac_hint_model"},{"bisac_code":"FIC027200","confidence_band":"low","label":"20th-Century Historical Romance","score":0.6638,"source":"bisac_hint_model"}],"hint":[{"bisac_code":"FIC027100","confidence_band":"medium","label":"Western Romance","score":0.7232,"source":"bisac_hint_model"},{"bisac_code":"FIC014080","confidence_band":"low","label":"20th-Century Historical Fiction","score":0.666,"source":"bisac_hint_model"},{"bisac_code":"FIC027200","confidence_band":"low","label":"20th-Century Historical Romance","score":0.6638,"source":"bisac_hint_model"}],"publisher":[{"bisac_code":"FIC004000","confidence_band":"high","label":"The Classics","score":1,"source":"onix_publisher_code"},{"bisac_code":"FIC027100","confidence_band":"high","label":"Western Romance","score":1,"source":"onix_publisher_code"},{"bisac_code":"FIC033000","confidence_band":"high","label":"Westerns","score":1,"source":"onix_publisher_code"}]},"genres":[{"label":"Western Romance","score":0.7232,"slug":"western-romance"},{"label":"20th-Century Historical Fiction","score":0.666,"slug":"20th-century-historical-fiction"},{"label":"20th-Century Historical Romance","score":0.6638,"slug":"20th-century-historical-romance"}],"reader_fit":["For readers interested in psychological unraveling amid a harsh Texas landscape."],"related_lists":[],"series":null,"similar_books":[{"authors":["Marion Zimmer Bradley"],"book_id":"9781682999653","cover_image_url":"https://img.bookfrontier.com/9781682999653.jpg?v=4c653ba8e3c91f90","score":0.7117,"title":"The Wind People","url":"https://bookfrontier.com/books/9781682999653"},{"authors":["Caroline Fyffe"],"book_id":"9781612187129","cover_image_url":"https://img.bookfrontier.com/9781612187129.jpg?v=7ba09aa8bc9a21d1","score":0.686,"title":"Where the Wind Blows","url":"https://bookfrontier.com/books/9781612187129"},{"authors":["Kristin Hannah"],"book_id":"9781250178619","cover_image_url":"https://img.bookfrontier.com/9781250178619.jpg?v=767d0c5a1dc66055","score":0.685,"title":"The Four Winds","url":"https://bookfrontier.com/books/9781250178619"},{"authors":["Pat Hutchins"],"book_id":"9780689717444","cover_image_url":"https://img.bookfrontier.com/9780689717444.jpg?v=d42068821ea3d513","score":0.6819,"title":"The Wind Blew","url":"https://bookfrontier.com/books/9780689717444"},{"authors":["George Macdonald"],"book_id":"9781627931137","cover_image_url":"https://img.bookfrontier.com/9781627931137.jpg?v=52b7f6f0ebb3b465","score":0.6741,"title":"At the Back of the North Wind","url":"https://bookfrontier.com/books/9781627931137"},{"authors":["Meg Medina"],"book_id":"9780763664190","cover_image_url":"https://img.bookfrontier.com/9780763664190.jpg?v=6ba3183b2040effb","score":0.661,"title":"The Girl Who Could Silence the Wind","url":"https://bookfrontier.com/books/9780763664190"},{"authors":["C.
