The Neobaroque, rather than being a return to the stylistic practices of a particular time and place, should be described as the continuation of a cultural strategy produced as a response to a specific problem of thought that has beset Europe and the colonial world since early modernity. This problem, in its simplest philosophical form, concerns the paradoxical relation between appearances and what they represent. Egginton explores expressions of this problem in the art and literature of the Hispanic Baroques, new and old. He shows how the strategies of these two Baroques emerged in the political and social world of the Spanish Empire, and how they continue to be deployed in the cultural politics of the present. Further, he offers a unified theory for the relation between the two Baroques and a new vocabulary for distinguishing between their ideological values.","forthcoming":false,"isbn13":"9780804769549","publication_date":"20091217","publisher":"Stanford University Press","slug":"the-theater-of-truth","subtitle":"The Ideology of (neo)baroque Aesthetics","title":"The Theater of Truth"},"discovery":{"categories":{"all":[{"bisac_code":"PER011020","confidence_band":"medium","label":"Theater History & Criticism","score":0.7803,"source":"bisac_hint_model"},{"bisac_code":"LIT004280","confidence_band":"medium","label":"Iberian Lit Crit","score":0.7773,"source":"bisac_hint_model"},{"bisac_code":"LIT004130","confidence_band":"medium","label":"European Lit Crit","score":0.7636,"source":"bisac_hint_model"}],"hint":[{"bisac_code":"PER011020","confidence_band":"medium","label":"Theater History & Criticism","score":0.7803,"source":"bisac_hint_model"},{"bisac_code":"LIT004280","confidence_band":"medium","label":"Iberian Lit Crit","score":0.7773,"source":"bisac_hint_model"},{"bisac_code":"LIT004130","confidence_band":"medium","label":"European Lit Crit","score":0.7636,"source":"bisac_hint_model"}],"publisher":[{"bisac_code":"LIT004280","confidence_band":"high","label":"Iberian Lit Crit","score":1,"source":"onix_publisher_code"}]},"genres":[{"label":"Theater History & Criticism","score":0.7803,"slug":"theater-history-criticism"},{"label":"Iberian Lit Crit","score":0.7773,"slug":"iberian-lit-crit"},{"label":"European Lit Crit","score":0.7636,"slug":"european-lit-crit"}],"reader_fit":["Good for readers who enjoy Theater History & Criticism","Good for readers who enjoy Theater History & Criticism and Iberian Lit Crit."],"related_lists":[],"series":null,"similar_books":[{"authors":["Luis Martín-Estudillo"],"book_id":"9780826505323","cover_image_url":"https://img.bookfrontier.com/9780826505323.jpg?v=20260418T162306Z%3A2026-04-20T23%3A15%3A44Z","score":8.8628,"title":"Goya and the Mystery of Reading","url":"https://bookfrontier.com/books/9780826505323"},{"authors":["Michael Iarocci"],"book_id":"9780826515223","cover_image_url":"https://img.bookfrontier.com/9780826515223.jpg?v=20260418T162306Z%3A2026-04-20T23%3A15%3A44Z","score":8.8557,"title":"Properties of Modernity","url":"https://bookfrontier.com/books/9780826515223"},{"authors":["Charles D.
