Well before climate change became a global concern, nuclear testing brought about untimely death, widespread diseases, forced migration, and irreparable destruction to the shores of Oceania. In The Ocean on Fire , Anaïs Maurer analyzes the Pacific literature that incriminates the environmental racism behind radioactive skies and rising seas. Maurer identifies strategies of resistance uniting the region by analyzing an extensive multilingual archive of decolonial Pacific art in French, Spanish, English, Tahitian, and Uvean, ranging from literature to songs and paintings. She shows how Pacific nuclear survivors’ stories reveal an alternative vision of the apocalypse: instead of promoting individualism and survivalism, they advocate mutual assistance, cultural resilience, South-South transnational solidarities, and Indigenous women’s leadership. Drawing upon their experience resisting both nuclear colonialism and carbon imperialism, Pacific storytellers offer compelling narratives to nurture the land and each other in times of global environmental collapse.","forthcoming":false,"isbn13":"9781478030041","publication_date":"20240419","publisher":"Duke University Press","slug":"the-ocean-on-fire","subtitle":"Pacific Stories From Nuclear Survivors and Climate Activists","title":"The Ocean on Fire"},"discovery":{"categories":{"all":[{"bisac_code":"LIT025020","confidence_band":"medium","label":"Nature in Literature","score":0.7544,"source":"bisac_hint_model"},{"bisac_code":"LIT004070","confidence_band":"medium","label":"Australian & Pacific Lit Crit","score":0.7224,"source":"bisac_hint_model"},{"bisac_code":"HIS027030","confidence_band":"medium","label":"Nuclear Warfare","score":0.7094,"source":"bisac_hint_model"}],"hint":[{"bisac_code":"LIT025020","confidence_band":"medium","label":"Nature in Literature","score":0.7544,"source":"bisac_hint_model"},{"bisac_code":"LIT004070","confidence_band":"medium","label":"Australian & Pacific Lit Crit","score":0.7224,"source":"bisac_hint_model"},{"bisac_code":"HIS027030","confidence_band":"medium","label":"Nuclear Warfare","score":0.7094,"source":"bisac_hint_model"}],"publisher":[{"bisac_code":"LIT004070","confidence_band":"high","label":"Australian & Pacific Lit Crit","score":1,"source":"onix_publisher_code"},{"bisac_code":"LIT025020","confidence_band":"high","label":"Nature in Literature","score":1,"source":"onix_publisher_code"},{"bisac_code":"SOC062000","confidence_band":"high","label":"Indigenous Studies","score":1,"source":"onix_publisher_code"}]},"genres":[{"label":"Nature in Literature","score":0.7544,"slug":"nature-in-literature"},{"label":"Australian & Pacific Lit Crit","score":0.7224,"slug":"australian-pacific-lit-crit"},{"label":"Nuclear Warfare","score":0.7094,"slug":"nuclear-warfare"}],"reader_fit":["For readers interested in Pacific literature and decolonial art","For readers exploring environmental racism and Indigenous resistance"],"related_lists":[],"series":null,"similar_books":[{"authors":["Daniel McKay","Patrick Porter","Joanna Bourke"],"book_id":"9781531505165","cover_image_url":"https://img.bookfrontier.com/9781531505165.jpg?v=4ea2b93568e7f8c5","score":0.7086,"title":"Beyond Hostile Islands","url":"https://bookfrontier.com/books/9781531505165"},{"authors":["Susan Southard","Traci Kato-Kiriyama","Recorded Books","& 0 more"],"book_id":"9780143109426","cover_image_url":"https://img.bookfrontier.com/9780143109426.jpg?v=734bf2d4ec26ba26","score":0.6666,"title":"Nagasaki","url":"https://bookfrontier.com/books/9780143109426"},{"authors":["Susanna Moore"],"book_id":"9780374298777","cover_image_url":"https://img.bookfrontier.com/9780374298777.jpg?v=908bc1d47d4f905c","score":0.662,"title":"Paradise of the Pacific","url":"https://bookfrontier.com/books/9780374298777"},{"authors":["Mark Bould"],"book_id":"9781839760471","cover_image_url":"https://img.bookfrontier.com/9781839760471.jpg?v=ff7c80a452db8408","score":0.6519,"title":"The Anthropocene Unconscious","url":"https://bookfrontier.com/books/9781839760471"},{"authors":["O.
