In striking counterpoint to these analyses, Lisa Brooks demonstrates the ways in which Native leaders—including Samson Occom, Joseph Brant, Hendrick Aupaumut, and William Apess—adopted writing as a tool to reclaim rights and land in the Native networks of what is now the northeastern United States. “The Common Pot,” a metaphor that appears in Native writings during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, embodies land, community, and the shared space of sustenance among relations. Far from being corrupted by forms of writing introduced by European colonizers, Brooks contends, Native people frequently rejected the roles intended for them by their missionary teachers and used the skills they acquired to compose petitions, political tracts, and speeches; to record community councils and histories; and most important, to imagine collectively the routes through which the Common Pot could survive. Reframing the historical landscape of the region, Brooks constructs a provocative new picture of Native space before and after colonization. By recovering and reexamining Algonquian and Iroquoian texts, she shows that writing was not a foreign technology but rather a crucial weapon in the Native Americans’ arsenal as they resisted—and today continue to oppose—colonial domination.","forthcoming":false,"isbn13":"9780816647842","publication_date":"20081002","publisher":"University of Minnesota Press","slug":"the-common-pot","subtitle":"The Recovery of Native Space in the Northeast","title":"The Common Pot"},"discovery":{"categories":{"all":[{"bisac_code":"LIT004060","confidence_band":"high","label":"Indigenous Lit Crit","score":0.8402,"source":"bisac_hint_model"},{"bisac_code":"LIT004020","confidence_band":"medium","label":"American Lit Crit","score":0.7452,"source":"bisac_hint_model"},{"bisac_code":"HIS036020","confidence_band":"medium","label":"Colonial America (to 1775)","score":0.7399,"source":"bisac_hint_model"}],"hint":[{"bisac_code":"LIT004060","confidence_band":"high","label":"Indigenous Lit Crit","score":0.8402,"source":"bisac_hint_model"},{"bisac_code":"LIT004020","confidence_band":"medium","label":"American Lit Crit","score":0.7452,"source":"bisac_hint_model"},{"bisac_code":"HIS036020","confidence_band":"medium","label":"Colonial America (to 1775)","score":0.7399,"source":"bisac_hint_model"}],"publisher":[{"bisac_code":"LIT004060","confidence_band":"high","label":"Indigenous Lit Crit","score":1,"source":"onix_publisher_code"},{"bisac_code":"SOC021000","confidence_band":"high","label":"Native American Studies","score":1,"source":"onix_publisher_code"}]},"genres":[{"label":"Indigenous Lit Crit","score":0.8402,"slug":"indigenous-lit-crit"},{"label":"American Lit Crit","score":0.7452,"slug":"american-lit-crit"},{"label":"Colonial America (to 1775)","score":0.7399,"slug":"colonial-america-to-1775"}],"reader_fit":["Good for readers who enjoy Indigenous Lit Crit","Good for readers who enjoy Indigenous Lit Crit and American Lit Crit."],"related_lists":[],"series":null,"similar_books":[{"authors":["Paul Giles"],"book_id":"9780190623999","cover_image_url":"https://img.bookfrontier.com/9780190623999.jpg?v=20260417T232332Z%3A2026-04-17T23%3A23%3A32Z","score":9.806,"title":"Antipodean America","url":"https://bookfrontier.com/books/9780190623999"},{"authors":["Geoff Hamilton"],"book_id":"9780813942445","cover_image_url":"https://img.bookfrontier.com/9780813942445.jpg?v=20260417T232332Z%3A2026-04-17T23%3A23%3A32Z","score":9.3393,"title":"A New Continent of Liberty","url":"https://bookfrontier.com/books/9780813942445"},{"authors":["Matthew Herman","Matthew D.
