Chahinian highlights two specific time periods—post WW I Paris and Post WW II Beirut—to trace the ways in which literature developed in each diaspora. In Paris, a literary movement known as Menk addressed the horrors they experienced and focused on creating a new literary aesthetic centered on belonging while in exile. In Beirut, Chahinian shows how the literature was nationalized in the absence of state institutions. Armenian intellectuals constructed a unified and coherent narrative of the diaspora that returned to the pre-1915 literary tradition and excluded the Menk generation. Chahinian argues that the adoption of ?national? as the literature's organizing logic ultimately limited its vitality and longevity as it ignored the diverse composition of diaspora communities.","forthcoming":false,"isbn13":"9780815637950","publication_date":"20230220","publisher":"Syracuse University Press","slug":"stateless","subtitle":"The Politics of the Armenian Language in Exile","title":"Stateless"},"discovery":{"categories":{"all":[{"bisac_code":"SOC008060","confidence_band":"high","label":"Cultural & Ethnic Studies / European Studies","score":1,"source":"bisac_hint_model"},{"bisac_code":"LIT004110","confidence_band":"medium","label":"East European Literary Criticism","score":0.7187,"source":"bisac_hint_model"},{"bisac_code":"LIT004220","confidence_band":"medium","label":"Middle Eastern Lit Crit","score":0.7139,"source":"bisac_hint_model"}],"hint":[{"bisac_code":"SOC008060","confidence_band":"high","label":"Cultural & Ethnic Studies / European Studies","score":1,"source":"bisac_hint_model"},{"bisac_code":"LIT004110","confidence_band":"medium","label":"East European Literary Criticism","score":0.7187,"source":"bisac_hint_model"},{"bisac_code":"LIT004220","confidence_band":"medium","label":"Middle Eastern Lit Crit","score":0.7139,"source":"bisac_hint_model"}],"publisher":[{"bisac_code":"HIS010010","confidence_band":"high","label":"Eastern European History","score":1,"source":"onix_publisher_code"},{"bisac_code":"LIT004110","confidence_band":"high","label":"East European Literary Criticism","score":1,"source":"onix_publisher_code"},{"bisac_code":"SOC008060","confidence_band":"high","label":"Cultural & Ethnic Studies / European Studies","score":1,"source":"onix_publisher_code"}]},"genres":[{"label":"Cultural & Ethnic Studies","score":1,"slug":"cultural-ethnic-studies"},{"label":"East European Literary Criticism","score":0.7187,"slug":"east-european-literary-criticism"},{"label":"Middle Eastern Lit Crit","score":0.7139,"slug":"middle-eastern-lit-crit"}],"reader_fit":["Good for readers interested in Western Armenian literary history and diaspora communities"],"related_lists":[],"series":null,"similar_books":[{"authors":["Nadine Takvorian"],"book_id":"9781646146369","cover_image_url":"https://img.bookfrontier.com/9781646146369.jpg?v=d9e0a57a4933d6dd","score":0.6516,"title":"Armaveni","url":"https://bookfrontier.com/books/9781646146369"},{"authors":["Rebecca Rose Mooradian"],"book_id":"9781665944137","cover_image_url":"https://img.bookfrontier.com/9781665944137.jpg?v=09d8339d64c90dbb","score":0.6253,"title":"Rose by the Sea","url":"https://bookfrontier.com/books/9781665944137"},{"authors":["Avi Shlaim"],"book_id":"9780861548101","cover_image_url":"https://img.bookfrontier.com/9780861548101.jpg?v=3662eb8eb2c0649f","score":0.625,"title":"Three Worlds","url":"https://bookfrontier.com/books/9780861548101"},{"authors":["Atia Abawi"],"book_id":"9780399546839","cover_image_url":"https://img.bookfrontier.com/9780399546839.jpg?v=d6363fefdf4b9304","score":0.6233,"title":"A Land of Permanent Goodbyes","url":"https://bookfrontier.com/books/9780399546839"},{"authors":["Zuzanna Olszewska"],"book_id":"9780253017604","cover_image_url":"https://img.bookfrontier.com/9780253017604.jpg?v=ea436f4f5d577a5b","score":0.6231,"title":"The Pearl of Dari","url":"https://bookfrontier.com/books/9780253017604"}],"topics":[{"evidence_refs":["keyword:western armenian literature"],"label":"Literature","score":0.057,"slug":"literature"},{"evidence_refs":["keyword:award winner"],"label":"Award","score":0.0359,"slug":"award"},{"evidence_refs":["keyword:language preservation"],"label":"Language","score":0.0318,"slug":"language"},{"evidence_refs":["keyword:literary criticism"],"label":"Literary","score":0.0312,"slug":"literary"},{"evidence_refs":["keyword:diaspora studies"],"label":"Studies","score":0.0285,"slug":"studies"}],"what_you_get":["Themes: Armenian diaspora literature, Belonging in exile, National identity and diaspora diversity.","Themes: Literature, Award, Language.","Reading lane: European Studies and East European Literary Criticism."]},"llm_signals":{"confidence":0.91,"pacing":"unknown","reader_fit":["Readers interested in Western Armenian literary history and diaspora communities"],"themes":["Armenian diaspora literature","Belonging in exile","National identity and diaspora diversity"],"tropes":[]},"source_presence":{"amazon":true,"book_detail":true,"goodreads":true,"llm_signals":true,"similarity_seed":true},"stats":{"amazon_ratings_count":9,"goodreads_ratings_count":10,"goodreads_reviews_count":2,"quality_score":0.8379}}
