To their minds the finest wisdom about the deeper issues of life prior to the time of God's taking human form in Jesus Christ was to be found in these books. As in all the Old Testament, they were quick to find types and intimations of Christ and his church that would make the ancient Word relevant to the Christians of their day. Of extant commentaries on Ecclesiastes none are so profound as the eight homilies of Gregory of Nyssa, even though they cover only the first three chapters of the book. Joining Gregory among those most frequently excerpted in this volume are Augustine, Ambrose, Gregory the Great, Origen, John Cassian, John Chrysostom, Athanasius, Bede the Venerable, and Jerome. Gregory of Nazianzus, Basil the Great, and Cyril of Jerusalem lead a cast of other less frequently cited fathers, and then there remains a large cast of supporting players, some of whose work is translated here into English for the first time. This Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture volume offers a rich trove of wisdom on Wisdom for the enrichment of the church today.","forthcoming":false,"isbn13":"9780830814794","publication_date":"20050408","publisher":"InterVarsity Press","slug":"proverbs-ecclesiastes-song-of-solomon","subtitle":"Volume 9","title":"Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Solomon"},"discovery":{"categories":{"all":[{"bisac_code":"REL006740","confidence_band":"medium","label":"Wisdom Literature (Bible)","score":0.8502,"source":"bisac_hint_model"},{"bisac_code":"REL006770","confidence_band":"medium","label":"Old Testament: Poetry & Wisdom","score":0.8406,"source":"bisac_hint_model"},{"bisac_code":"REL006210","confidence_band":"medium","label":"Old Testament Studies","score":0.8119,"source":"bisac_hint_model"}],"hint":[{"bisac_code":"REL006740","confidence_band":"medium","label":"Wisdom Literature (Bible)","score":0.8502,"source":"bisac_hint_model"},{"bisac_code":"REL006770","confidence_band":"medium","label":"Old Testament: Poetry & Wisdom","score":0.8406,"source":"bisac_hint_model"},{"bisac_code":"REL006210","confidence_band":"medium","label":"Old Testament Studies","score":0.8119,"source":"bisac_hint_model"}],"publisher":[{"bisac_code":"REL006740","confidence_band":"high","label":"Wisdom Literature (Bible)","score":1,"source":"onix_publisher_code"},{"bisac_code":"REL006770","confidence_band":"high","label":"Old Testament: Poetry & Wisdom","score":1,"source":"onix_publisher_code"},{"bisac_code":"REL067080","confidence_band":"high","label":"History of Christian Thought","score":1,"source":"onix_publisher_code"}]},"genres":[{"label":"Wisdom Literature (Bible)","score":0.8502,"slug":"wisdom-literature-bible"},{"label":"Old Testament: Poetry & Wisdom","score":0.8406,"slug":"old-testament-poetry-wisdom"},{"label":"Old Testament Studies","score":0.8119,"slug":"old-testament-studies"}],"reader_fit":["Readers seeking early Christian commentary on Old Testament wisdom books","Christians interested in patristic readings of Scripture"],"related_lists":[],"series":null,"similar_books":[{"authors":["Derek Kidner"],"book_id":"9780877844051","cover_image_url":"https://img.bookfrontier.com/9780877844051.jpg?v=5785c5af6160748d","score":0.8536,"title":"The Wisdom of Proverbs, Job and Ecclesiastes","url":"https://bookfrontier.com/books/9780877844051"},{"authors":["Craig G.
