Chika Okeke-Agulu traces the artistic, intellectual, and critical networks in several Nigerian cities. Zaria is particularly important, because it was there, at the Nigerian College of Arts, Science and Technology, that a group of students formed the Art Society and inaugurated postcolonial modernism in Nigeria. As Okeke-Agulu explains, their works show both a deep connection with local artistic traditions and the stylistic sophistication that we have come to associate with twentieth-century modernist practices. He explores how these young Nigerian artists were inspired by the rhetoric and ideologies of decolonization and nationalism in the early- and mid-twentieth century and, later, by advocates of negritude and pan-Africanism. They translated the experiences of decolonization into a distinctive \"postcolonial modernism\" that has continued to inform the work of major Nigerian artists.","forthcoming":false,"isbn13":"9780822357469","publication_date":"20150302","publisher":"Duke University Press","slug":"postcolonial-modernism","subtitle":"Art and Decolonization in Twentieth-century Nigeria","title":"Postcolonial Modernism"},"discovery":{"categories":{"all":[{"bisac_code":"ART015010","confidence_band":"high","label":"African Art History","score":0.8098,"source":"bisac_hint_model"},{"bisac_code":"HIS001050","confidence_band":"medium","label":"West African History","score":0.7412,"source":"bisac_hint_model"},{"bisac_code":"LIT004010","confidence_band":"medium","label":"African Lit Crit","score":0.7372,"source":"bisac_hint_model"}],"hint":[{"bisac_code":"ART015010","confidence_band":"high","label":"African Art History","score":0.8098,"source":"bisac_hint_model"},{"bisac_code":"HIS001050","confidence_band":"medium","label":"West African History","score":0.7412,"source":"bisac_hint_model"},{"bisac_code":"LIT004010","confidence_band":"medium","label":"African Lit Crit","score":0.7372,"source":"bisac_hint_model"}],"publisher":[{"bisac_code":"ART009000","confidence_band":"high","label":"Art Criticism & Ideas","score":1,"source":"onix_publisher_code"},{"bisac_code":"ART015010","confidence_band":"high","label":"African Art History","score":1,"source":"onix_publisher_code"},{"bisac_code":"ART015110","confidence_band":"high","label":"Contemporary Art History (1945-)","score":1,"source":"onix_publisher_code"}]},"genres":[{"label":"African Art History","score":0.8098,"slug":"african-art-history"},{"label":"West African History","score":0.7412,"slug":"west-african-history"},{"label":"African Lit Crit","score":0.7372,"slug":"african-lit-crit"}],"reader_fit":["Good for readers interested in Nigerian art and decolonization","Readers studying modernism in twentieth-century Nigeria"],"related_lists":[],"series":null,"similar_books":[{"authors":["Stith Thompson","Sidney Littlefield Kasfir"],"book_id":"9780253219220","cover_image_url":"https://img.bookfrontier.com/9780253219220.jpg?v=3d4020de20e7ab5b","score":0.6924,"title":"African Art and the Colonial Encounter","url":"https://bookfrontier.com/books/9780253219220"},{"authors":["Philip Jowett","Raffaele Ruggeri"],"book_id":"9781472816092","cover_image_url":"https://img.bookfrontier.com/9781472816092.jpg?v=226d59e4ce689b01","score":0.6842,"title":"Modern African Wars (5)","url":"https://bookfrontier.com/books/9781472816092"},{"authors":["Cécile Fromont"],"book_id":"9781469641249","cover_image_url":"https://img.bookfrontier.com/9781469641249.jpg?v=04ffa7dc154a7800","score":0.6839,"title":"The Art of Conversion","url":"https://bookfrontier.com/books/9781469641249"},{"authors":["Max Siollun"],"book_id":"9781911723264","cover_image_url":"https://img.bookfrontier.com/9781911723264.jpg?v=49cf64e6d1883bf2","score":0.6615,"title":"What Britain Did to Nigeria","url":"https://bookfrontier.com/books/9781911723264"}],"topics":[],"what_you_get":["Themes: Nigerian postcolonial modernism, Art and decolonization, Nationalism and pan-Africanism.","Reading lane: African Art History and West African History.","Publisher: Duke University Press."]},"llm_signals":{"confidence":0.91,"pacing":"unknown","reader_fit":["Readers interested in Nigerian art and decolonization","Readers studying modernism in twentieth-century Nigeria"],"themes":["Nigerian postcolonial modernism","Art and decolonization","Nationalism and pan-Africanism"],"tropes":[]},"source_presence":{"amazon":true,"book_detail":true,"goodreads":true,"llm_signals":true,"similarity_seed":true},"stats":{"amazon_ratings_count":14,"goodreads_ratings_count":12,"goodreads_reviews_count":4,"quality_score":0.8471}}
