Her illuminating readings juxtapose Frederick Douglass’s narrative of witnessing the brutal beating of his Aunt Hester with Essie Mae Washington-Williams’s declaration of freedom in Dear Senator: A Memoir by the Daughter of Strom Thurmond , as well as the “generational genital fantasies” depicted in Gayl Jones’s novel Corregidora with a firsthand account of such “monstrous intimacies” in the journals of an antebellum South Carolina senator, slaveholder, and vocal critic of miscegenation. Sharpe explores the South African–born writer Bessie Head’s novel Maru —about race, power, and liberation in Botswana—in light of the history of the KhoiSan woman Saartje Baartman, who was displayed in Europe as the “Hottentot Venus” in the nineteenth century. Reading Isaac Julien’s film The Attendant , Sharpe takes up issues of representation, slavery, and the sadomasochism of everyday black life. Her powerful meditation on intimacy, subjection, and subjectivity culminates in an analysis of Kara Walker’s black silhouettes, and the critiques leveled against both the silhouettes and the artist.","forthcoming":false,"isbn13":"9780822346098","publication_date":"20100907","publisher":"Duke University Press","slug":"monstrous-intimacies","subtitle":"Making Post-slavery Subjects","title":"Monstrous Intimacies"},"discovery":{"categories":{"all":[{"bisac_code":"LIT004040","confidence_band":"medium","label":"Black Lit Crit","score":0.7597,"source":"bisac_hint_model"},{"bisac_code":"SOC008010","confidence_band":"medium","label":"African Studies","score":0.7404,"source":"bisac_hint_model"},{"bisac_code":"LIT004030","confidence_band":"medium","label":"Asian American Lit Crit","score":0.7356,"source":"bisac_hint_model"}],"hint":[{"bisac_code":"LIT004040","confidence_band":"medium","label":"Black Lit Crit","score":0.7597,"source":"bisac_hint_model"},{"bisac_code":"SOC008010","confidence_band":"medium","label":"African Studies","score":0.7404,"source":"bisac_hint_model"},{"bisac_code":"LIT004030","confidence_band":"medium","label":"Asian American Lit Crit","score":0.7356,"source":"bisac_hint_model"}],"publisher":[{"bisac_code":"LIT004030","confidence_band":"high","label":"Asian American Lit Crit","score":1,"source":"onix_publisher_code"},{"bisac_code":"LIT006000","confidence_band":"high","label":"Literary Theory","score":1,"source":"onix_publisher_code"},{"bisac_code":"SOC028000","confidence_band":"high","label":"Women's Studies","score":1,"source":"onix_publisher_code"}]},"genres":[{"label":"Black Lit Crit","score":0.7597,"slug":"black-lit-crit"},{"label":"African Studies","score":0.7404,"slug":"african-studies"},{"label":"Asian American Lit Crit","score":0.7356,"slug":"asian-american-lit-crit"}],"reader_fit":["Good for readers interested in Black Atlantic art and literature","Readers exploring slavery’s legacy in the present"],"related_lists":[],"series":null,"similar_books":[{"authors":["Tiya Miles"],"book_id":"9781469636146","cover_image_url":"https://img.bookfrontier.com/9781469636146.jpg?v=156818318e3255bd","score":0.6604,"title":"Tales From the Haunted South","url":"https://bookfrontier.com/books/9781469636146"},{"authors":["Sarah Myer"],"book_id":"9781250268808","cover_image_url":"https://img.bookfrontier.com/9781250268808.jpg?v=52439fa2822fb667","score":0.6537,"title":"Monstrous","url":"https://bookfrontier.com/books/9781250268808"},{"authors":["Martha S.
