One of the most popular of these shows was Lum and Abner , the brainchild of Chester \"Chet\" Lauck and Norris \"Tuffy\" Goff, two young businessmen from Arkansas. Beginning in 1931 and lasting for more than two decades, the show revolved around the lives of ordinary people in the fictional community of Pine Ridge, based on the hamlet of Waters, Arkansas. The Title characters, who are farmers, local officials, and the keepers of the Jot 'Em Down Store, manage to entangle themselves in a variety of hilarious dilemmas. The program's gentle humor and often complex characters had wide appeal both to rural southerners, who were accustomed to being the butt of jokes in the national media, and to urban listeners who were fascinated by descriptions of life in the American countryside. Lum and Abner was characterized by the snappy, verbal comedic dueling that became popular on radio programs of the 1930s. Using this format, Lauck and Goff allowed their characters to subvert traditional authority and to poke fun at common misconceptions about rural life. The show also featured hillbilly and other popular music, an innovation that drew a bigger audience. As a result, Arkansas experienced a boom in tourism, and southern listeners began to immerse themselves in a new national popular culture. In Lum and Abner: Rural America and the Golden Age of Radio , historian Randal L. Hall explains the history and importance of the program, its creators, and its national audience. He also presents a treasure trove of twenty-nine previously unavailable scripts from the show's earliest period, scripts that reveal much about the Great Depression, rural life, hillbilly stereotypes, and a seminal period of American radio.","forthcoming":false,"isbn13":"9780813124698","publication_date":"20070907","publisher":"University Press of Kentucky","slug":"lum-and-abner","subtitle":"Rural America and the Golden Age of Radio","title":"Lum and Abner"},"discovery":{"categories":{"all":[{"bisac_code":"PER008010","confidence_band":"medium","label":"Radio History","score":0.6981,"source":"bisac_hint_model"},{"bisac_code":"SOC026020","confidence_band":"low","label":"Rural Life","score":0.654,"source":"bisac_hint_model"},{"bisac_code":"HIS036120","confidence_band":"low","label":"Southern U.S. History","score":0.6515,"source":"bisac_hint_model"}],"hint":[{"bisac_code":"PER008010","confidence_band":"medium","label":"Radio History","score":0.6981,"source":"bisac_hint_model"},{"bisac_code":"SOC026020","confidence_band":"low","label":"Rural Life","score":0.654,"source":"bisac_hint_model"},{"bisac_code":"HIS036120","confidence_band":"low","label":"Southern U.S. History","score":0.6515,"source":"bisac_hint_model"}],"publisher":[{"bisac_code":"PER008010","confidence_band":"high","label":"Radio History","score":1,"source":"onix_publisher_code"}]},"genres":[{"label":"Radio History","score":0.6981,"slug":"radio-history"},{"label":"Rural Life","score":0.654,"slug":"rural-life"},{"label":"Southern U.S. History","score":0.6515,"slug":"southern-u-s-history"}],"reader_fit":["Good for readers interested in the history of American radio","Good for readers interested in rural life during the Great Depression"],"related_lists":[],"series":null,"similar_books":[{"authors":["Bob Greene"],"book_id":"9780060081973","cover_image_url":"https://img.bookfrontier.com/9780060081973.jpg?v=84468dbb5a07816e","score":0.583,"title":"Once Upon a Town","url":"https://bookfrontier.com/books/9780060081973"},{"authors":["Erik Barnouw"],"book_id":"9780195004755","cover_image_url":"https://img.bookfrontier.com/9780195004755.jpg?v=d3af548f586da121","score":0.5716,"title":"A History of Broadcasting in the United States: Volume 2: the Golden Web. 1933 to 1953","url":"https://bookfrontier.com/books/9780195004755"},{"authors":["Barbara Dianne Savage"],"book_id":"9780807848043","cover_image_url":"https://img.bookfrontier.com/9780807848043.jpg?v=4b29e148c23234ee","score":0.5632,"title":"Broadcasting Freedom","url":"https://bookfrontier.com/books/9780807848043"},{"authors":["Patrick J.
