Stephen Hong Sohn provides extended readings of fictions involving queer Asian North American storytellers, looking to texts including Russell Leong's \"Camouflage,\" Lydia Kwa's Pulse , Alexander Chee's Edinburgh , Nina Revoyr's Wingshooters , and Noël Alumit's Letters to Montgomery Clift . Despite many antagonistic forces, these works' protagonists achieve a revolutionary form of narrative centrality through the defiant act of speaking out, recounting their \"survival plots,\" and enduring to the very last page. These feats are made possible through their construction of alternative social structures Sohn calls \"inscrutable belongings.\" Collectively, the texts that Sohn examines bring to mind foundational struggles for queer Asian North Americans (and other socially marginalized groups) and confront a broad range of issues, including interracial desire, the AIDS/HIV epidemic, transnational mobility, and postcolonial trauma. In these texts, Asian North American queer people are often excluded from normative family structures and must contend with multiple histories of oppression, erasure, and physical violence, involving homophobia, racism, and social death. Sohn's work makes clear that for such writers and their imagined communities, questions of survival, kinship, and narrative development are more than representational—they are directly tied to lived experience.","forthcoming":false,"isbn13":"9781503605923","publication_date":"20180717","publisher":"Stanford University Press","slug":"inscrutable-belongings","subtitle":"Queer Asian North American Fiction","title":"Inscrutable Belongings"},"discovery":{"categories":{"all":[{"bisac_code":"LIT004030","confidence_band":"high","label":"Asian American Lit Crit","score":0.8492,"source":"bisac_hint_model"},{"bisac_code":"LIT004160","confidence_band":"medium","label":"Queer Literary Criticism","score":0.7986,"source":"bisac_hint_model"},{"bisac_code":"LIT025060","confidence_band":"medium","label":"Race & Culture in Literature","score":0.7915,"source":"bisac_hint_model"}],"hint":[{"bisac_code":"LIT004030","confidence_band":"high","label":"Asian American Lit Crit","score":0.8492,"source":"bisac_hint_model"},{"bisac_code":"LIT004160","confidence_band":"medium","label":"Queer Literary Criticism","score":0.7986,"source":"bisac_hint_model"},{"bisac_code":"LIT025060","confidence_band":"medium","label":"Race & Culture in Literature","score":0.7915,"source":"bisac_hint_model"}],"publisher":[{"bisac_code":"LIT004030","confidence_band":"high","label":"Asian American Lit Crit","score":1,"source":"onix_publisher_code"}]},"genres":[{"label":"Asian American Lit Crit","score":0.8492,"slug":"asian-american-lit-crit"},{"label":"Queer Literary Criticism","score":0.7986,"slug":"queer-literary-criticism"},{"label":"Race & Culture in Literature","score":0.7915,"slug":"race-culture-in-literature"}],"reader_fit":["Good for readers who enjoy Asian American Lit Crit","Good for readers interested in queer","Good for readers who enjoy Asian American Lit Crit and Queer Literary Criticism."],"related_lists":[],"series":null,"similar_books":[{"authors":["Dan Jones"],"book_id":"9781804191361","cover_image_url":"https://img.bookfrontier.com/9781804191361.jpg?v=20260418T162306Z%3A2026-04-18T16%3A23%3A06Z","score":13.0909,"title":"Queer Villains of Myth and Legend","url":"https://bookfrontier.com/books/9781804191361"},{"authors":["Dan Jones"],"book_id":"9781804190470","cover_image_url":"https://img.bookfrontier.com/9781804190470.jpg?v=20260418T162306Z%3A2026-04-18T16%3A23%3A06Z","score":13.0353,"title":"Queer Heroes of Myth and Legend","url":"https://bookfrontier.com/books/9781804190470"},{"authors":["Viet Thanh Nguyen"],"book_id":"9780674298170","cover_image_url":"https://img.bookfrontier.com/9780674298170.jpg?v=20260418T162306Z%3A2026-04-18T16%3A23%3A06Z","score":11.2985,"title":"To Save and to Destroy","url":"https://bookfrontier.com/books/9780674298170"},{"authors":["Jaime Harker"],"book_id":"9781469643359","cover_image_url":"https://img.bookfrontier.com/9781469643359.jpg?v=20260418T162306Z%3A2026-04-18T16%3A23%3A06Z","score":10.8101,"title":"The Lesbian South","url":"https://bookfrontier.com/books/9781469643359"},{"authors":["Nella Larsen"],"book_id":"9781627931311","cover_image_url":"https://img.bookfrontier.com/9781627931311.jpg?v=20260418T162306Z%3A2026-04-18T16%3A23%3A06Z","score":9.5427,"title":"Quicksand","url":"https://bookfrontier.com/books/9781627931311"}],"topics":[{"evidence_refs":["keyword:queer literature"],"label":"Literature","score":0.1235,"slug":"literature"},{"evidence_refs":["keyword:literary criticism"],"label":"Literary","score":0.0955,"slug":"literary"},{"evidence_refs":["keyword:survival plot"],"label":"Survival","score":0.0574,"slug":"survival"},{"evidence_refs":["keyword:queer literature"],"label":"Queer","score":0.0444,"slug":"queer"}],"what_you_get":["Themes: Literature, Literary, Survival.","Reading lane: Asian American Lit Crit and Queer Literary Criticism.","Publisher: Stanford University Press."]},"llm_signals":null,"source_presence":{"amazon":true,"book_detail":true,"goodreads":true,"llm_signals":false,"similarity_seed":true},"stats":{"amazon_ratings_count":0,"goodreads_ratings_count":6,"goodreads_reviews_count":0,"quality_score":0.8127}}
