It served as a basis for future muckraking journalism by exposing the slums to New York City's upper and middle class. How The Other Half Lives quickly became a landmark in the annals of social reform. Riis documented the filth, disease, exploitation, and overcrowding that characterized the experience of more than one million immigrants. He helped push tenement reform to the front of New York's political agenda, and prompted then-Police Commissioner Theodore Roosevelt to close down the police-run poor houses. Roosevelt later called Riis \"the most useful citizen of New York\". Riis's idea inspired Jack London to write a similar exposé on London's East End, called People of the Abyss.","forthcoming":false,"isbn13":"9781625584250","publication_date":"20130718","publisher":"Start Publishing LLC","slug":"how-the-other-half-lives","subtitle":"","title":"How the Other Half Lives"},"discovery":{"categories":{"all":[{"bisac_code":"SOC026030","confidence_band":"medium","label":"Urban Life","score":0.7508,"source":"bisac_hint_model"},{"bisac_code":"HIS036080","confidence_band":"medium","label":"Middle Atlantic History","score":0.7395,"source":"bisac_hint_model"},{"bisac_code":"HIS036010","confidence_band":"medium","label":"U.S. State & Local History","score":0.7079,"source":"bisac_hint_model"}],"hint":[{"bisac_code":"SOC026030","confidence_band":"medium","label":"Urban Life","score":0.7508,"source":"bisac_hint_model"},{"bisac_code":"HIS036080","confidence_band":"medium","label":"Middle Atlantic History","score":0.7395,"source":"bisac_hint_model"},{"bisac_code":"HIS036010","confidence_band":"medium","label":"U.S. State & Local History","score":0.7079,"source":"bisac_hint_model"}],"publisher":[{"bisac_code":"HIS036040","confidence_band":"high","label":"19th-Century America","score":1,"source":"onix_publisher_code"}]},"genres":[{"label":"Urban Life","score":0.7508,"slug":"urban-life"},{"label":"Middle Atlantic History","score":0.7395,"slug":"middle-atlantic-history"},{"label":"U.S. State & Local History","score":0.7079,"slug":"u-s-state-local-history"}],"reader_fit":["Good for readers interested in historical photojournalism and urban poverty","Good for readers interested in social reform and immigrant living conditions"],"related_lists":[],"series":null,"similar_books":[{"authors":["Gilbert Osofsky"],"book_id":"9781566631044","cover_image_url":"https://img.bookfrontier.com/9781566631044.jpg?v=20d0ea543483e0ae","score":0.6616,"title":"Harlem: the Making of a Ghetto","url":"https://bookfrontier.com/books/9781566631044"},{"authors":["Jane Jacobs"],"book_id":"9780679741954","cover_image_url":"https://img.bookfrontier.com/9780679741954.jpg?v=0d90a2f2d404a666","score":0.6608,"title":"The Death and Life of Great American Cities","url":"https://bookfrontier.com/books/9780679741954"},{"authors":["Matthew Desmond"],"book_id":"9780553447453","cover_image_url":"https://img.bookfrontier.com/9780553447453.jpg?v=ad7cd8b6a51cef6d","score":0.6441,"title":"Evicted","url":"https://bookfrontier.com/books/9780553447453"},{"authors":["Alex Kotlowitz"],"book_id":"9780385265560","cover_image_url":"https://img.bookfrontier.com/9780385265560.jpg?v=d16f39b338273152","score":0.6397,"title":"There Are No Children Here","url":"https://bookfrontier.com/books/9780385265560"},{"authors":["Mitchell Duneier"],"book_id":"9780374527259","cover_image_url":"https://img.bookfrontier.com/9780374527259.jpg?v=42b2fc24a3434f0d","score":0.6386,"title":"Sidewalk","url":"https://bookfrontier.com/books/9780374527259"},{"authors":["Evan Hughes"],"book_id":"9780805089868","cover_image_url":"https://img.bookfrontier.com/9780805089868.jpg?v=ed3f163d70426c8e","score":0.6342,"title":"Literary Brooklyn","url":"https://bookfrontier.com/books/9780805089868"},{"authors":["Brian Goldstone"],"book_id":"9780593237168","cover_image_url":"https://img.bookfrontier.com/9780593237168.jpg?v=2aef91008b46d34e","score":0.6339,"title":"There Is No Place for US","url":"https://bookfrontier.com/books/9780593237168"},{"authors":["M.
