In Eastern Cherokee Stories , Sandra Muse Isaacs uses the concepts of Gadugi and Duyvkta to explore the Eastern Cherokee oral tradition, and to explain how storytelling in this tradition—as both an ancient and a contemporary literary form—is instrumental in the perpetuation of Cherokee identity and culture. Muse Isaacs worked among the Eastern Cherokees of North Carolina, recording stories and documenting storytelling practices and examining the Eastern Cherokee oral tradition as both an ancient and contemporary literary form. For the descendants of those Cherokees who evaded forced removal by the U.S. government in the 1830s, storytelling has been a vital tool of survival and resistance—and as Muse Isaacs shows us, this remains true today, as storytelling plays a powerful role in motivating and educating tribal members and others about contemporary issues such as land reclamation, cultural regeneration, and language revitalization. The stories collected and analyzed in this volume range from tales of creation and origins that tell about the natural world around the homeland, to post-Removal stories that often employ Native humor to present the Cherokee side of history to Cherokee and non-Cherokee alike. The persistence of this living oral tradition as a means to promote nationhood and tribal sovereignty, to revitalize culture and language, and to present the Indigenous view of history and the land bears testimony to the tenacity and resilience of the Cherokee people, the Ani-Giduwah .","forthcoming":false,"isbn13":"9780806190129","publication_date":"20220125","publisher":"University of Oklahoma Press","slug":"eastern-cherokee-stories","subtitle":"A Living Oral Tradition and Its Cultural Continuance","title":"Eastern Cherokee Stories"},"discovery":{"categories":{"all":[{"bisac_code":"LIT004060","confidence_band":"medium","label":"Indigenous Lit Crit","score":0.7411,"source":"bisac_hint_model"},{"bisac_code":"JNF018040","confidence_band":"medium","label":"Native American Life (U.S.)","score":0.7075,"source":"bisac_hint_model"},{"bisac_code":"YAN038140","confidence_band":"medium","label":"Native American U.S. History for Teens","score":0.6922,"source":"bisac_hint_model"}],"hint":[{"bisac_code":"LIT004060","confidence_band":"medium","label":"Indigenous Lit Crit","score":0.7411,"source":"bisac_hint_model"},{"bisac_code":"JNF018040","confidence_band":"medium","label":"Native American Life (U.S.)","score":0.7075,"source":"bisac_hint_model"},{"bisac_code":"YAN038140","confidence_band":"medium","label":"Native American U.S. History for Teens","score":0.6922,"source":"bisac_hint_model"}],"publisher":[{"bisac_code":"HIS028000","confidence_band":"high","label":"Native American History","score":1,"source":"onix_publisher_code"},{"bisac_code":"LAN009010","confidence_band":"high","label":"Historical Linguistics","score":1,"source":"onix_publisher_code"},{"bisac_code":"LIT004060","confidence_band":"high","label":"Indigenous Lit Crit","score":1,"source":"onix_publisher_code"},{"bisac_code":"SOC002000","confidence_band":"high","label":"Cultural Anthropology","score":1,"source":"onix_publisher_code"},{"bisac_code":"SOC021000","confidence_band":"high","label":"Native American Studies","score":1,"source":"onix_publisher_code"}]},"genres":[{"label":"Indigenous Lit Crit","score":0.7411,"slug":"indigenous-lit-crit"},{"label":"Native American Life (U.S.)","score":0.7075,"slug":"native-american-life-u-s"},{"label":"Native American U.S. History for Teens","score":0.6922,"slug":"native-american-u-s-history-for-teens"}],"reader_fit":["For readers interested in Eastern Cherokee storytelling and cultural continuity","For readers exploring Indigenous perspectives on history and land"],"related_lists":[],"series":null,"similar_books":[{"authors":["Michael Caduto","Joseph Bruchac"],"book_id":"9781555910945","cover_image_url":"https://img.bookfrontier.com/9781555910945.jpg?v=32511f9b43f4c96a","score":0.6881,"title":"Native American Stories","url":"https://bookfrontier.com/books/9781555910945"},{"authors":["Hitakonanu'laxk (Tree Beard)"],"book_id":"9781623717872","cover_image_url":"https://img.bookfrontier.com/9781623717872.jpg?v=8ed0e2d4827f3f4a","score":0.6745,"title":"The Grandfathers Speak","url":"https://bookfrontier.com/books/9781623717872"},{"authors":["Daniel J.
