At the age of twenty-one, he started a school for peasant children on his family's estate, and after returning from a stint in the military, he founded another, experimental school with the motto, \"Come when you like, leave when you like.\"Fascinated by the simple charm and the fresh innocence with which the children of his schools told stories, several years later, when Tolstoy began writing about his own childhood, he emulated the uncomplicated narrative style and disarming directness of the tales told by the children of his acquaintance. After completing War and Peace, he incorporated these stories in a series of easy readers, and continued to work on them even while writing Anna Karenina. Known as The ABC Book (Azbuka) and subsequently The New ABC Book (Novy Azbuka), these marvelous readers were widely adopted in Russia and were still in use in the Soviet era.The tales and fables in this volume come mainly from these two well-loved primers. Part I consists of stories about his own childhood, all told with beautiful simplicity. Part II contains Tolstoy's free adaptations of fables from Aesop and from Hindu tradition. Part III is devoted solely to his longest and most famous children's work, the fairy tale \"Ivan the Fool and His Two Brothers.\"Never patronizing and often humorous, these small gems reveal Tolstoy's deep appreciation for and understanding of children's artistic and moral sensibilities.","forthcoming":false,"isbn13":"9781573929394","publication_date":"20011101","publisher":"Globe Pequot Publishing","slug":"classic-tales-and-fables-for-children","subtitle":"","title":"Classic Tales and Fables for Children"},"discovery":{"categories":{"all":[{"bisac_code":"JUV012020","confidence_band":"medium","label":"Country & Ethnic Folktales","score":0.7448,"source":"bisac_hint_model"},{"bisac_code":"JUV012040","confidence_band":"medium","label":"Folktale Retellings","score":0.7369,"source":"bisac_hint_model"},{"bisac_code":"JUV002150","confidence_band":"medium","label":"Big Cats","score":0.7345,"source":"bisac_hint_model"}],"hint":[{"bisac_code":"JUV012020","confidence_band":"medium","label":"Country & Ethnic Folktales","score":0.7448,"source":"bisac_hint_model"},{"bisac_code":"JUV012040","confidence_band":"medium","label":"Folktale Retellings","score":0.7369,"source":"bisac_hint_model"},{"bisac_code":"JUV002150","confidence_band":"medium","label":"Big Cats","score":0.7345,"source":"bisac_hint_model"}],"publisher":[{"bisac_code":"JUV012000","confidence_band":"high","label":"Fairy Tale Collections","score":1,"source":"onix_publisher_code"},{"bisac_code":"JUV012020","confidence_band":"high","label":"Country & Ethnic Folktales","score":1,"source":"onix_publisher_code"},{"bisac_code":"JUV038000","confidence_band":"high","label":"Short Stories","score":1,"source":"onix_publisher_code"}]},"genres":[{"label":"Country & Ethnic Folktales","score":0.7448,"slug":"country-ethnic-folktales"},{"label":"Folktale Retellings","score":0.7369,"slug":"folktale-retellings"},{"label":"Big Cats","score":0.7345,"slug":"big-cats"}],"reader_fit":["Readers seeking simply told stories written for children"],"related_lists":[],"series":null,"similar_books":[{"authors":["Aleksandr Afanas'ev"],"book_id":"9780394730905","cover_image_url":"https://img.bookfrontier.com/9780394730905.jpg?v=26b73312255fc5e0","score":0.7473,"title":"Russian Fairy Tales","url":"https://bookfrontier.com/books/9780394730905"},{"authors":["Aesop"],"book_id":"9781625583383","cover_image_url":"https://img.bookfrontier.com/9781625583383.jpg?v=1a081101c93f2c34","score":0.7328,"title":"The Aesop for Children","url":"https://bookfrontier.com/books/9781625583383"},{"authors":["Aesop","Charles Santore"],"book_id":"9781604338102","cover_image_url":"https://img.bookfrontier.com/9781604338102.jpg?v=f93f50b7123b7422","score":0.7025,"title":"Aesop's Fables Hardcover","url":"https://bookfrontier.com/books/9781604338102"},{"authors":["Paul Galdone"],"book_id":"9780547852768","cover_image_url":"https://img.bookfrontier.com/9780547852768.jpg?v=10e43ce564280db4","score":0.6987,"title":"The Folk Tale Classics Heirloom Library","url":"https://bookfrontier.com/books/9780547852768"},{"authors":["Charles Perrault"],"book_id":"9780679451037","cover_image_url":"https://img.bookfrontier.com/9780679451037.jpg?v=36edd8e6732a50c8","score":0.6983,"title":"Little Red Riding Hood and Other Stories","url":"https://bookfrontier.com/books/9780679451037"},{"authors":["Joanna Cole"],"book_id":"9780385189491","cover_image_url":"https://img.bookfrontier.com/9780385189491.jpg?v=390105de741d75f4","score":0.6912,"title":"Best-loved Folktales of the World","url":"https://bookfrontier.com/books/9780385189491"},{"authors":["Leo Tolstoy","Peter Sekirin"],"book_id":"9780310223672","cover_image_url":"https://img.bookfrontier.com/9780310223672.jpg?v=34604478563e68ef","score":0.6886,"title":"Divine and Human","url":"https://bookfrontier.com/books/9780310223672"}],"topics":[{"evidence_refs":["phrase_map_match"],"label":"Short Stories","score":0.0216,"slug":"short-story"}],"what_you_get":["Themes: Childhood stories, Adapted traditional fables, Children's moral sensibilities.","Themes: Short Stories.","Reading lane: Country & Ethnic Folktales and Folktale Retellings."]},"llm_signals":{"confidence":0.92,"pacing":"unknown","reader_fit":["Readers seeking simply told stories written for children"],"themes":["Childhood stories","Adapted traditional fables","Children's moral sensibilities"],"tropes":[]},"source_presence":{"amazon":true,"book_detail":true,"goodreads":true,"llm_signals":true,"similarity_seed":true},"stats":{"amazon_ratings_count":28,"goodreads_ratings_count":131,"goodreads_reviews_count":3,"quality_score":0.8616}}
