Boldly articulating the unspeakable, these writers break the silence imposed by families or ethnic communities and defy the dominant culture that suppresses the voicing of minority experiences. Yet at the same time, they demonstrate how silences?voiceless gestures, textual ellipses, authorial hesitations?can themselves be articulate. Drawing on theoretical works on women's writing, on ethnicity and race, and on postmodernism and history, Cheung takes issue with Anglo-American feminists who valorize speech unequivocally and with revisionist Asian American male critics who attempt to refute Orientalist stereotypes by renouncing silence. She challenges Eurocentric views of speech and silence as polarized, hierarchical, and gendered, and proposes an approach to Asian American literature which overturns the \"East-West\" or \"dual personality\" model. Yamamoto, Kingston, and Kogawa interweave speech and silence, narration and ellipses, autobiography and fiction as they adapt and recast Asian and Euro-American precursors. Drawing freely from both traditions, they reinvent the past by decentering, disseminating, and interrogating authority-but not by reappropriating it. A fresh and subtle response to issues relating to cultural diversity, Articulate Silences will be important reading for scholars and students in the fie,4s of literary theory and criticism, women's studies, Asian American studies, and ethnic studies.","forthcoming":false,"isbn13":"9780801424151","publication_date":"19930708","publisher":"Cornell University Press","slug":"articulate-silences","subtitle":"Hisaye Yamamoto, Maxine Hong Kingston, and Joy Kogewa","title":"Articulate Silences"},"discovery":{"categories":{"all":[{"bisac_code":"LIT004030","confidence_band":"high","label":"Asian American Lit Crit","score":0.8054,"source":"bisac_hint_model"},{"bisac_code":"LIT008030","confidence_band":"medium","label":"Japanese Literary Criticism","score":0.7329,"source":"bisac_hint_model"},{"bisac_code":"LIT025060","confidence_band":"medium","label":"Race & Culture in Literature","score":0.7149,"source":"bisac_hint_model"}],"hint":[{"bisac_code":"LIT004030","confidence_band":"high","label":"Asian American Lit Crit","score":0.8054,"source":"bisac_hint_model"},{"bisac_code":"LIT008030","confidence_band":"medium","label":"Japanese Literary Criticism","score":0.7329,"source":"bisac_hint_model"},{"bisac_code":"LIT025060","confidence_band":"medium","label":"Race & Culture in Literature","score":0.7149,"source":"bisac_hint_model"}],"publisher":[{"bisac_code":"LIT004030","confidence_band":"high","label":"Asian American Lit Crit","score":1,"source":"onix_publisher_code"},{"bisac_code":"SOC043000","confidence_band":"high","label":"Asian American Studies","score":1,"source":"onix_publisher_code"}]},"genres":[{"label":"Asian American Lit Crit","score":0.8054,"slug":"asian-american-lit-crit"},{"label":"Japanese Literary Criticism","score":0.7329,"slug":"japanese-literary-criticism"},{"label":"Race & Culture in Literature","score":0.7149,"slug":"race-culture-in-literature"}],"reader_fit":["For scholars and students of literary theory, women's studies, and Asian American studies"],"related_lists":[],"series":null,"similar_books":[{"authors":["Say-ling Cynthia Wong"],"book_id":"9780195116540","cover_image_url":"https://img.bookfrontier.com/9780195116540.jpg?v=4b664fffce78ac4b","score":0.7088,"title":"Maxine Hong Kingston's the Woman Warrior","url":"https://bookfrontier.com/books/9780195116540"},{"authors":["Stephen Hong Sohn"],"book_id":"9781503605923","cover_image_url":"https://img.bookfrontier.com/9781503605923.jpg?v=2aae066aab04ce73","score":0.6971,"title":"Inscrutable Belongings","url":"https://bookfrontier.com/books/9781503605923"},{"authors":["Yunte Huang"],"book_id":"9780674026377","cover_image_url":"https://img.bookfrontier.com/9780674026377.jpg?v=a716c5061cba2668","score":0.6882,"title":"Transpacific Imaginations","url":"https://bookfrontier.com/books/9780674026377"},{"authors":["Lianke Yan"],"book_id":"9781478030393","cover_image_url":"https://img.bookfrontier.com/9781478030393.jpg?v=21ff8c5c7f2a92ba","score":0.6878,"title":"Sound and Silence","url":"https://bookfrontier.com/books/9781478030393"},{"authors":["Jinqi Ling"],"book_id":"9781350336018","cover_image_url":"https://img.bookfrontier.com/9781350336018.jpg?v=767c5abfde26fa36","score":0.6857,"title":"Asian American Literature","url":"https://bookfrontier.com/books/9781350336018"},{"authors":["Mary Paik Lee","Sucheng Chan"],"book_id":"9780295746722","cover_image_url":"https://img.bookfrontier.com/9780295746722.jpg?v=5b7000b48b7b13a4","score":0.6772,"title":"Quiet Odyssey","url":"https://bookfrontier.com/books/9780295746722"},{"authors":["Juliana Chang"],"book_id":"9780816674442","cover_image_url":"https://img.bookfrontier.com/9780816674442.jpg?v=ed8962734d793c11","score":0.6589,"title":"Inhuman Citizenship","url":"https://bookfrontier.com/books/9780816674442"},{"authors":["Grace S.
