How does their intentionality and thought connect with their social nature and their communal experience? How do the answers to these questions shape the assumptions which it is legitimate to make in social explanation and political evaluation? These are the broad-ranging issues which Pettit addresses in this novel study. The Common Mind argues for an original way of marking off thinking subjects, in particular human beings, from other intentional systems, natural and artificial. It holds by the holistic view that human thought requires communal resources while denying that this social connection compromises the autonomy of individuals. And, in developing the significance of this view of social subjects--this holistic individualism--it outlines a novel framework for social and political theory. Within this framework, social theory is allowed to follow any of a number of paths: space is found for intentional interpretation and decision-theoretic reconstruction, for structural explanation and rational choice derivation. But political theory is treated less ecumenically. The framework raises serious questions about contractarian and atomistic modes of thought and it points the way to a republican rethinking of liberal commitments.","forthcoming":false,"isbn13":"9780195106459","publication_date":"19860301","publisher":"Oxford University Press","slug":"the-common-mind-an-essay-on-psychology-society-and-politics-with-a-new-postscript","subtitle":"","title":"The Common Mind: an Essay on Psychology, Society, and Politics With a New Postscript"},"discovery":{"categories":{"all":[{"bisac_code":"PHI004000","confidence_band":"high","label":"What We Can Know","score":1,"source":"onix_publisher_code"}],"hint":[],"publisher":[{"bisac_code":"PHI004000","confidence_band":"high","label":"What We Can Know","score":1,"source":"onix_publisher_code"}]},"genres":[{"label":"What We Can Know","score":1,"slug":"what-we-can-know"}],"reader_fit":["Good for readers who enjoy What We Can Know","Good for fans of Philosophy","Good for readers who enjoy What We Can Know."],"related_lists":[],"series":null,"similar_books":[{"authors":["William James"],"book_id":"9781627930352","cover_image_url":"https://img.bookfrontier.com/9781627930352.jpg?v=20260402T191500Z-bisacv2site-fullset%3A2026-04-05T16%3A15%3A58Z","score":5.5226,"title":"The Meaning of Truth","url":"https://bookfrontier.com/books/9781627930352"},{"authors":["David Abram"],"book_id":"9780375713699","cover_image_url":"https://img.bookfrontier.com/9780375713699.jpg?v=20260402T191500Z-bisacv2site-fullset%3A2026-04-05T16%3A15%3A58Z","score":5.5011,"title":"Becoming Animal","url":"https://bookfrontier.com/books/9780375713699"},{"authors":["Immanuel Kant"],"book_id":"9798880914432","cover_image_url":"https://img.bookfrontier.com/9798880914432.jpg?v=20260402T191500Z-bisacv2site-fullset%3A2026-04-05T16%3A15%3A58Z","score":5.4965,"title":"The Critique of Judgement","url":"https://bookfrontier.com/books/9798880914432"},{"authors":["Michael Root"],"book_id":"9780631190424","cover_image_url":"https://img.bookfrontier.com/9780631190424.jpg?v=20260402T191500Z-bisacv2site-fullset%3A2026-04-05T16%3A15%3A58Z","score":2.8491,"title":"Philosophy of Social Science","url":"https://bookfrontier.com/books/9780631190424"},{"authors":["Annie Murphy Paul","Mariner Books"],"book_id":"9780358695271","cover_image_url":"https://img.bookfrontier.com/9780358695271.jpg?v=20260402T191500Z-bisacv2site-fullset%3A2026-04-05T16%3A15%3A58Z","score":2.8089,"title":"The Extended Mind","url":"https://bookfrontier.com/books/9780358695271"},{"authors":["Annaka Harris"],"book_id":"9780062906717","cover_image_url":"https://img.bookfrontier.com/9780062906717.jpg?v=20260402T191500Z-bisacv2site-fullset%3A2026-04-05T16%3A15%3A58Z","score":2.8011,"title":"Conscious","url":"https://bookfrontier.com/books/9780062906717"},{"authors":["Aristotle"],"book_id":"9781625584984","cover_image_url":"https://img.bookfrontier.com/9781625584984.jpg?v=20260402T191500Z-bisacv2site-fullset%3A2026-04-05T16%3A15%3A58Z","score":2.7741,"title":"The Politics","url":"https://bookfrontier.com/books/9781625584984"},{"authors":["Jacques Rancière","Gabriel Rockhill"],"book_id":"9781780935355","cover_image_url":"https://img.bookfrontier.com/9781780935355.jpg?v=20260402T191500Z-bisacv2site-fullset%3A2026-04-05T16%3A15%3A58Z","score":2.7335,"title":"The Politics of Aesthetics","url":"https://bookfrontier.com/books/9781780935355"}],"topics":[],"what_you_get":["Reading lane: What We Can Know.","Publisher: Oxford University Press."]},"llm_signals":null,"source_presence":{"amazon":true,"book_detail":true,"goodreads":true,"llm_signals":false,"similarity_seed":true},"stats":{"amazon_ratings_count":0,"goodreads_ratings_count":10,"goodreads_reviews_count":0,"quality_score":0.8156}}
